The Dawn Madras Warehouse, marketing Hudson, Essex and Reo Trucks established
MADRAS AUTO SERVICE (MAS) in 1931 as its brainchild, to serve the automotive
spare parts industry in India. MAS owes its standing in the automotive
spare parts industry to the visionary ardor of its founder.
Soon, Madras Auto Service became the distributor for GM Service Corporation,
General Motors, USA and was entrusted in Marketing and Servicing of
Delco Remy Electrical Spares, ND Ball Bearings, Hyatt Roller Bearings
and Harrision Radiators. And its association with Madras Warehouse brought
the marketing of AC Spark Plugs and other AC Electrical Spares under
its wing.
MAS also developed good raport with a host of other international spare
part manufacturers emerging as the distributor for Electrical Spares
of North East Electrical Corporation, USA. Central distributor for Carter
Carburetor AEC Indutries, USA. Distributor for Starter Drives, Hydrovac
and Delco Hydraulic Brake Parts from Bendix Aviation Corporation, USA.
Distributor of Brake Parts for Clayton Dewandre, UK and Dashboard Instruments
from Stewart Warner Corporation, USA.
Bestowal
When the Government of India formulated the policy of self-reliance
for the automotive industry, Indian Companies began manufacturing vehicles
and Ancillary manufacturers started manufacturing components. MAS took
up the distribution of indigenously manufactured components.
Where do we stand today
Today, MAS represents more than 70 ancillary manufacturers, whose products
are well accepted in the market being dependable, cost-effective and
catering satisfactory service. In addition to marketing spares for trucks
and cars, tractors, earth moving equipment, gensets and IC engines,
MAS today is one of the largest wholesalers of spare parts with a network
of over 10,000 dealers.
Branching Out
MAS has opened branches in Southern, Western and Central parts of the
country and marketing TVS-Suzuki vehicles at Goa, forcing the availability
on a widerscale and at cost effective prioces. This has contributed
to the reduction in the cost of procurement for the users and also created
a sense of confidence in them helping us improve business and increase
production stabstantially in the past two decades.
The number of branches stood at 2 in 1936 and from 1960 to 1999 grew
to 36. To augment the activity of its branches, MAS has encouraged its
fraternity of dealers, whose number has increased in all intents and
purposes. In 1936, MAS had 200 dealers, 1200 in 1970 and today it exceeds
7,500. It is expected to reach 10,000 by the year 2000.
The entry of new Multinational vehicle manufacturers has changed the
scenario in the automotive Industry in India. The quality of the vehicle
manufacturers and the component manufacturers has improved. To meet
the new challenges of the next century in a changing environment and
to retain the leadership in the Automotive Component Marketing Industry,
Madras Auto Service will be opening more branches all over the country,
adding new products, to serve the needs of the new generation vehicles
manufactured in India.
With the advancement in the IT industry, we have computerised all the
branches enabling us to serve customers faster.
The
Objective
MAS aspires to continue its expansion drive well into the next century
and eventually create a network that will span the length and breadthofthe
country. While this will naturally have a welcome impact on the sales
graph, the real emphasis at MAS is to maintain the cherished standards
